We drove up the side of Vesuvio on a somewhat clear day. The best tomatoes are grown on the side of the mountain as are grapes that make a wonderful white wine called Lacrima Cristi or "tears of Christ". We parked and then continued by foot for aprox 30 min. until we reached the crater where our ticket included a guided tour. The day we were there, there was an Italian eco challenge type group and a government minister there along with a film crew. Some of the participants were competing with a climb down into the crater and then running the circumference. The volcano is still active and we could see steam rising from the crater.
